Cleanup Routine (for Windows 98 users)

- Get a clean start by rebooting the computer using the normal shutdown process to restart the PC.

- Disable Screen Saver (if any is used) by right clicking on the Desktop, then selecting Properties. Click the Screen Saver Tab and then select None in the Screen Saver list box. Click OK. The next time the computer is turned on the screensaver will be reactivated.

- Disable Anti Virus software (if any is used) by holding the CTRL and ALT keys down and pressing DEL just once. This will open the Close Programs window and show programs that are currently active. Select either navapw32 or vshwin32 (two of the most commonly used programs, Norton’s and McAfee) by clicking on them, then click on END TASK. To ensure that they are disabled, repeat this operation until they no longer appear in the Close Programs Box. The next time the computer is turned on, the software will be reactivated.

- Empty the Windows Temp folder (C:\Windows\temp) of all files and folders. A quick way is to click on START, select RUN, then type in the following: %temp% then click OK.  Click on EDIT (on the top menu bar) then click on SELECT ALL. This will highlight any files/folders which are in the Windows\Temp folder. Next, click on the Delete Button (X) to remove the files to the Recycle Bin, thus emptying the Windows\Temp Folder. If Access is Denied, it’s because that particular file or folder is being used by a program that is still running. Deselect (un-highlight) that file to skip over it.

- Empty the Recycle Bin of all unwanted files or folders.

- Empty Temporary Internet Files by going to the Control Panel, click on Internet Options icon, click on Delete Files, click OK and OK to close the window.

- Start SCANDISK by clicking on START, click on RUN, and type in the word SCANDISK followed by the Enter key. Check to see that the (C:) drive is selected, Type of Test is Standard, and Automatically fix errors is checkmarked. Then click on START. When SCANDISK is finished, a summary window will appear. Click on CLOSE.

- Start DEFRAG by clicking on START, click on RUN, and type in DEFRAG C: followed by the Enter key. Select Drive C and click on OK. When finished, click on CLOSE.

While the above procedure won’t solve all of the problems you might encounter, it will go a long way in monitoring the general health of your computer, repairing some errors, and improving overall performance. This routine can be done monthly or more often if the PC is heavily used.
