Text Box: News – Spyware Info

In recent years, the Internet has grown quickly but so have things that affect our enjoying it. Various names have been used such as spyware, adware, hijacker, etc., but we’ll just refer to them as BAD STUFF, unwanted things that creep into your computer and cause problems.

There are many web sites that explain this activity in great detail and we suggest you visit them to get a better understanding of this growing problem. One such site is http://www.lavasoftusa.com the makers of a product named AD-AWARE that helps find and remove this “BAD STUFF”.

Another website to visit is http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html the makers of SPYBOT Search and Destroy which does the same job as Ad-Aware and catches things that Ad-Aware might miss. Using both programs gets very good results and best of all they are both FREE (although donations are accepted for the great service they both provide).

While AD-AWARE and SPYBOT can scan for existing “BAD STUFF”, there is another program named SPYWARE BLASTER that you can visit at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com. This program tries to stop the “BAD STUFF” before it gets into your computer and is also FREE.

Updates
Using these three programs will help stop “BAD STUFF” from crippling your computer but only if you keep them updated! Doing a manual update on a routine basis will provide these programs with current search information so they can be more effective. All three programs provide manual updates FREE of charges but some do provide for automated update on a pay/subscription basis.

All three programs have links to their respective update sites and in most cases, updating takes very little time to do.

Scanning
After updating the programs, you have to perform a manual scan using Ad-Aware and Spybot, one at a time, in order to remove the “BAD STUFF”. Opening Ad-Aware, click on the START button, then NEXT and the scanning will start and last several minutes. When finished, it will report how many objects were found and you continue clicking on NEXT as prompted until all objects are removed. Simply follow the prompts until the STATUS shows as OK.
Opening Spybot, click on CHECK FOR PROBLEMS to start the scanning operation which will usually last under ten minutes. When finished it will list all the bad objects, at which time you can click on FIX SELECTED PROBLEMS to start the removal process. If it is unable to remove all objects, it will advise you to allow it to start on the next restart/reboot of your computer. Ad-Aware may also request to activate after a restart if unable to remove all objects.
Spyware Blaster simply monitors your Internet operations to try to prevent “BAD STUFF” from infecting your computer, so no scanning is needed.
We suggest you read the HELP files in each program to get a better understanding of these programs and how they can be of help in keeping your PC running well.
